[Dispatch=구민지기자] '아이즈원'은 다시 한 무대에 설 수 있을까?
CJ ENM은 고개를 흔들었다.
"다양한 가능성을 열어두고 대화를 나눠왔다. 하지만 재결합은 최종 무산됐다."
2021년 4월 29일. 2년 6개월의 여정을 마치고 각자의 위치로 돌아갔다. 사쿠라, 히토미, 나코 등 일본인 멤버들은 본국으로 향했다.
그러나 '위즈원'의 시계는 멈추지 않았다. '평행우주위원회'를 조직했고, CJ와 접촉했다. 펀딩도 시작했다. 지금까지 모은 돈은 약 32억 원.
아쉽게도, 희망고문으로 끝날 가능성이 크다. 소속사의 입장은 여전히 평행선. '완전체' 컴백은 불가능한 상황이다. 유닛 활동마저 희박해 보인다.
문제는, 평행우주운영위가 펀딩한 32억 원이다. 그들은 "방법이 없는 건 아니다. 유닛에 희망을 걸고 있다. 다양한 시도를 할 것"이라며 끈을 놓지 않고 있다.
'디스패치'가 아이즈원 재결합 모금 운동을 살펴봤다. 펀딩의 궁금증을 'Q & D'(Question & Dispatch)로 풀었다. 결론부터 말하면, 어떤 확률도 0%에 가깝다.
◆ "32억 원은, 이렇게 모았다"
평행우주운영위는 지난 4월 설립한 비법인 사단이다. 그들은 스스로를 위즈원을 대표한다고 말했다. "소속사와 리런칭 협상을 진행하고, 투명한 모금을 하겠다"며 설립 취지를 밝혔다.
Q. 모금은 어떤 방식으로 진행했나?
D : 크게 2가지다. 크라우드 펀딩 플랫폼(와디즈)와 직영 사이트(reboot-iz.one)에서 후원금을 모았다. '리부트 아이즈원'은 평행우주프로젝트에서 직접 만든 (모금) 사이트다.
Q. 와디즈와 직영사이트의 차이점은?
D. : 와디즈는 (예약) 후불제다. 마감일 다음날 카드 결제가 진행된다. 직영 사이트는 현금을 선입금하는 방식이다. 후원 가능 계좌번호가 공지돼 있다.
Q. 지금까지 얼마를 모았나?
D. 직영 사이트로 5억 7,426만 원이 모였다. 6억 원에 가까운 돈이다. 직영 사이트와 와디즈 펀딩 2개 사이트 모금액 합계는 32억 1,277만 원이다.
Q. 32억 원이 아이즈원에게 전달되나?
D. 아니다. 운영위에 따르면, 32억 원은 아이즈원 팬덤의 구매력을 증명하는 '수단'이다.
Q. 팬덤의 구매력을 증명한다?
D. 그렇다. 팬덤의 구매력을 과시하기 위한 것이다. 한 마디로, "우리 '위즈원'은 적어도 32억 원의 돈을 쓸 준비가 되어 있어요. 우리 구매력은 최소 이 정도 수준입니다"를 보여주는 것이다.
Q. 재결합 앨범 제작비에 사용하는 게 아니고?
D. 운영위는 앨범 제작비용으로 쓸 수도 있다고 했다. 하지만 이는 비현실적인 공략이 됐다. 그도 그럴 것이, CJ는 "재결합이 성사되어도 팬덤의 지원을 받을 계획은 없다"고 공식화했다.
Q. 그럼 32억 원을 다시 돌려주나?
D. 운영위는 "환불을 원하면 환불해 주겠다"는 입장이다. 단, 환불 신청 기간에 요청을 해야 한다는 단서를 달았다.
Q. 환불을 신청하지 않으면?
D. 리워드 방식으로 보상해 준다. 예를 들어, 후원금만큼 아이즈원 굿즈(또는 콘서트 티켓, 팬클럽 가입비)를 전해주는 방식이다.
Q. 굿즈? 재결합이 없는데 굿즈가 나올 수 있나?
D. 없다. 그래서 운영위는 '완전체', 또는 '유닛'을 요청하고 있다. 만약 재결합이라는 전제조건이 성사되지 않는다면, 운영위가 만들 리워드(굿즈, 콘서트 티켓, 팬클럽 가입비)는 없다.
◆ "재결합은, 진짜 가능할까?"
운영위는 개별 멤버 소속사에 리런칭을 문의했다고 말했다. 그러나 '디스패치' 확인 결과, 대부분의 소속사는 "운영위 측과 리런칭을 논의한 적이 없다"고 밝혔다.
Q. 운영위는 재결합을 위해 어떤 노력을 기울였나?
D. 아이즈원 소속사에 '리런칭 제안서'를 등기로 발송했다고 전했다. "각각의 소속사들과 협의를 진행했다. 한국 소속사 1곳과 일본 사무소를 제외하면 리런칭에 자체에는 동의했다"고 설명했다.
Q. 소속사의 입장은?
D. 소속사들은 즉답을 피했다. "등기를 받지 못했다"는 곳도 있었다. 새로운 프로젝트를 준비하는 회사도 있었다. 운영위의 바람대로 흘러가진 않았다.
Q. 프로젝트?
D. '디스패치' 취재 결과, 멤버 A와 B는 재결합 의사가 아예 없었다. 신생 걸그룹을 기획하는 회사도 있었다. 멤버 B, C, D, E도 개별 활동을 고려했다. 멤버 F와 G는 휴식을 취하고 있다. 리런칭 계획도, 개별 활동 계획도 현재까진 없다는 것. H와 I는 리런칭을 기다리지만 쉽지 않아 보인다고 말했다. J와 K는 유닛 활동에 의지를 보였다. 그러나 현실의 벽이 높다는 것도 인정했다.
Q. 운영위은 계속 소속사를 설득하고 있나?
D. 운영위는 소속사와의 접촉을 진행 중이라고 말했다. CJ측과도 다시 대화를 시도할 것이라고 덧붙였다. 그러나 한 걸음 더 나아갈 수 있을지, 미지수다. 운영위가 할 수 있는 건, 답변을 기다리는 것뿐이다.
◆ "재결합 불발에도, 모금은 ing"
아이즈원은 재결합은 최종적으로 물거품이 됐다. 대부분의 멤버들은 개별 활동을 선택했다. CJ는 "리런칭이 최종적으로 무산됐다”고 선언했다. 그럼에도 불구, 와디즈 펀딩은 지금도 진행 중이다.
Q. 와디즈 펀딩을 8월 2일까지 연장했다고?
D. 운영위는 '플랜B'를 내세웠다. "CJ에서 더 이상 재결합을 진행하지 않겠다고 한 것은 사실이다. 하지만 아직 재결합이 무산된 건 아니다"고 강조했다.
Q. 재결합이 무산되지 않았다?
D. 운영위는 "완전체가 아니어도 된다. 유닛 결성 방법도 있다. 개별 소속사에 제안서를 보낼 것"이라고 답했다.
Q. 유닛은 현실성이 있는 건가?
D. CJ 측은 이미 불가능하다고 못을 박았다. 소속사들도 개별 활동 계획을 세우고 있다. J와 K 정도가 유닛으로 나올 수는 있다. 그러나 시장 상황 등 변수가 많다.
Q. 일부 팬들은 환불을 받을 수 있나?
D. 환불은 가능했다. 하지만 운영위는 별도의 신청 기간을 따로 마련했다. 그 기간 안에 해야 한다.
Q. 신청 기간을 따로 두는 이유는?
D. 운영위는 "(안전하게 모금액을 관리하기 위해) 직영 사이트 계좌에 '지급정지'를 걸어둔 상태"라고 말했다. "운영위 임원 7명이 모여 인감 등을 갖고 직접 은행을 방문해야 인출이 가능하다"며 즉시 환불이 불가한 이유를 설명했다.
Q. 운영위원회 7명은 누구인가?
D. 아이즈원 갤러리 대표 5명, 대규모 공구를 진행한 인물 1명, 고문 변호사 등 7명이다. 전체적인 운영 방향은 갤러리에서 팬들과 함께 정한다고 밝히고 있다.
Q. 펀딩 연장, 결론적으로 의미가 있을까?
D. 운영위는 "팬들이 32억 원이라는 큰돈을 모았다. 포기하지 않고 CJ 및 소속사 등과 협의를 할 예정이다. 지푸라기라도 잡는 심정으로 끝까지 최선을 다하겠다. 연장 기간까지 기다려달라"고 덧붙였다.

Can IZ*ONE be on the same stage again?
CJ ENM shook its head.
“We’ve been having conversations with many options open. But in the end, the reunion is canceled.”
April 29, 2021. After a two-and-a-half-year journey, they went back to their respective positions. The Japanese members Sakura, Hitomi and Nako headed back home.
WIZ*ONE’s clock did not stop, however. They organized a “Parallel Universe Project Steering Committee” and contacted CJ. They also began fundraising. So far, they have raised about 3.2 billion won (27.9 million USD).
Unfortunately, this is likely to end in false hope. The agency's position remains unchanged. An “all-member” comeback is impossible. Even chances of a unit group seem to be slim.
The problem is the 3.2 billion won fund raised by the Steering Committee. "There are other ways. We are pinning our hopes on a unit group,” they said. "We will make various attempts," they exclaimed, still holding on to hope.
‘Dispatch’ examined the IZ*ONE reunion fundraising campaign. We answered questions regarding the funding through a “Q&D” (Questions & Dispatch). The bottom line? Any probability is close to a 0%.
◆ “This is how 3.2 billion won was raised”
The Parallel Space Project Steering Committee is an unincorporated association established last April. They claim to represent WIZ*ONE. They announced, "we will negotiate re-launching with the agency and raise money transparently," stating the purpose of the Steering Committee’s establishment.
Q. How was the fundraising process?
D: There were two main sources. The Steering Committee received donations through a crowdfunding platform (Wadiz) and a directly managed website (reboot-iz.one). “Reboot IZ*ONE” is a (fundraising) website created by the Parallel Space Project.
Q. What is the difference between Wadiz and the website?
D: Wadiz has a (reservation-based) deferred payment system. Your payment goes through only after the project deadline. The website receives cash prepayments. The fund’s bank account number is up there.
Q. How much has been raised so far?
D. 574 million won (503 thousand USD) has been raised through the website. That is near 600 million won (525 thousand USD). The total amount of money raised by the website and the Wadiz funding is 3,212,770,000 won (about 28 million USD)
Q. Will the 3.2 billion won be delivered to IZ*ONE?
D. No. According to the Steering Committee, the 3.2 billion won is a “means” to prove the purchasing power of the IZ*ONE fandom.
Q. Proving the fandom’s purchasing power?
D. Yes, it is to show off the purchasing power of the fandom. In short, it shows that "we WIZ*ONE are ready to spend at least 3.2 billion won. This is the level of our purchasing power, at the least.”
Q. It is not used for the reunion album production fee?
D. The Steering Committee said the money could be used for album production costs. However, this has become an unrealistic strategy. CJ officially stated that they have no plans to receive support from fandoms even if the reunion were to take place.
Q. Then will the 3.2 billion won be given back?
D. The Steering Committee holds that they will "send out refunds if requested." However, they added that the request must be made during the refund application period.
Q. What if one does not apply for a refund?
D. The Steering Committee will compensate them through sending out “rewards.” For example, IZ*ONE merchandise (or concert tickets, fan club membership fees) equivalent to the amount the person donated will be delivered.
Q. Merchandise? Can there be merchandise without a reunion?
D. No. That is why the Steering Committee is asking for an ‘all-member’ or 'unit' (reunion). If the prerequisite of reuniting is not met, there will be no “rewards” (merchandise, concert tickets, fan club membership fees) that are to be made by the Steering Committee.
◆ “Will the reunion really be possible?”
The Steering Committee says they contacted each members’ agencies about the re-launching. However, investigation by “Dispatch” revealed that most agencies “never discussed re-launching with the Steering Committee.”
Q. What efforts has the Steering Committee made towards reunification?
D. The Steering Committee reportedly sent in "re-launching proposals" to IZ*ONE’s agencies by registered mail. "We had discussions with each of the individual agencies. Except for one Korean agency and one Japanese office, they all agreed to the re-launch itself,” they explained.
Q. What do the agencies say?
The agencies did not give an immediate answer. There was a place that said, "we did not receive any mail." There was also a company preparing for a new project. Things were not going the way the Steering Committee wanted.
Q. What project?
D. Investigation by “Dispatch” revealed that members A and B had no intentions of reuniting at all. There was also a company that was planning a new girl group. Members B, C, D and E also considered going solo. Members F and G are taking a break. Meaning there are no plans for re-launching nor individual activities so far. H and I look forward to a re-launch, but it does not look easy. J and K showed willingness towards unit group activities. However, they also admitted that there are lots of hurdles.
Q. Is the Steering Committee still persuading the agency?
D. The Steering Committee says they are continuing to contact agencies. They also added that they will reattempt to talk with CJ. But it remains unclear whether it will be possible to take a step further. All the Steering Committee can do is wait for an answer.
◆ “Fundraisings continue despite reunion is canceled”
IZ*ONE's reunion has finally gone up in smoke. Most members chose to go solo. CJ declared that “the re-launching is conclusively canceled.” Nevertheless, the Wadiz funding is still under way.
Q. The Wadiz funding has been extended to the 2nd of August?
D. The Steering Committee has put forward a “Plan B.” "It is true CJ said that there would be no reunion. However, the reunion has yet to be canceled,” they persisted.
Q. Yet to be canceled?
D. The Steering Committee answered, "it doesn’t have to consist of all members. There is also a way of forming a unit group. We will send proposals to individual agencies.”
Q. Is it realistic to expect a unit?
D. CJ has already made it clear that it is impossible. The agencies are also planning solo activities. Members J and K can perhaps come back as a unit. However, there are many variables such as the market situation.
Q. Can some fans get a refund?
D. Getting a refund is possible. However, the Steering Committee set up a separate application period. The refund must be done within that period.
Q. Why is there a set application period?
D. "We have placed a 'suspension of payment' on the website’s account (to safely manage the money)," says the Steering Committee. "Withdrawal is possible only when the seven executives of the Steering Committee visit the bank in person with a seal," they said, explaining why it is impossible to send out immediate refunds.
Q. Who are the seven members of the Steering Committee?
D. There are seven representatives, including five representatives from the IZ*ONE Gallery, a member who once carried out a large joint purchase, and a lawyer. They report that the overall direction of the operation will be decided along with the fans.
Q. In the end, is the funding extension worth it?
D. "Fans have raised an immense amount of money of 3.2 billion won. We will not give up discussing with CJ and other agencies. We will try our best, grasping at straws. Please wait until the end of the extension period,” added the Steering Committee.
